Subject: anti-GMO concerns
I'm writing because I do NOT support the bills that attempt to ban GMO. There are too many people
who blindly react to anything that has the label of'science' attached to it, and misunderstand how
science is a double edged sword. It can help us tremendously, and it can also cause harm if we aren't
careful.
GMO crops have been a savior to many people on Hawaii island, and I am concerned that an outright
ban is a blind, foolish attempt to appease a very vocal group that absolutely does not represent all of us
living and voting on this island.
While I also have concerns about major corporations and the misuse of GMO crops, the problem is very
nuanced. Not all GMO is a so-called Frankenfood, and not all GMO is aimed at creating crops that
resist chemical applications like round-up. I have known many people who worked at researching crops
with higher protein yields and drought resistance in order to better feed people healthy food, and they
would use all tools available. To ban this tool because some have misused it seems reactionary and
short-sighted.
I hope that the council can take a much more careful look at this issue, and realize that the solutions will
be more complex than any sort of ban. The very talk of a ban seems a foolish attempt to appease a vocal
group that makes many of us afraid to even speak out in our communities, because the vitriol and
emotions run so deep that it is nearly impossible to have a public conversation on this topic.
