Subject: farming legislation
Committee Chair Ford and Members of the Committee:
I saw mention of two bills this morning under consideration for political, rather than
safety reasons. As a small nonGMO farmer with a focus on heritage/heirloom, I do not know
if every bit of feed my chicken eat is or is not GMO. The fastest way to cripple
agriculture in the state is support of measures like this - measures that provide a
healthy food that people want because some individuals do not want that choice available.
I oppose Bills 109 and 113 because any anti-GMO legislation in Hawaii County will
discriminate against our farmers and ranchers who choose to use approved genetic
engineered technology to grow safe and wholesome food and other agriculture products.
These Bills also damage Hawaii' s reputation for producing some of the best crops on the
planet, harms our markets, and eventually destroy our agriculture industry.
I am pro-farming and the right to farm in the United States of America, still a free
country, under laws of and regulated by the USA and the State of Hawaii. I would hope that
if someone introduced legislation making it illegal to eat Longhorn cattle, or Rhode
Island Red chickens or Giant Chinchilla rabbits - I would hope that fellow farmers would
speak for me, as an outnumbered minority. And I would hope to have the attention of a
council that considers the entire ramifications of the proposed bills, not just the
loudest voices.
