Committee on Human Services, Social Services & Public Safety Committee on Economic Development & Mass Transit Wednesday, September 4, 2013 at 1:30 pm Bill 109 Related to the Restriction of Genetically Modified Organisms Bill 113 Related to Genetically Engineered Crops and Plants Position: Opposed to Bill 109 and Bill 113 Committee Chair Ford, Committee Vice Chair Wille and members of the Hawaii County Council, My name is Mark Kijima from Maui County. I am providing testimony in opposition to Bill 109 and Bill 113. I find it incredible that in the midst of one of the most astounding examples in the WORLD of how a genetically engineered crop has literally saved an industry and in an area whose economy is so dependent on the success of its agronomic base that you can even consider such shortsighted legislation. Even as you accept this testimony, there are other crops in your county that are currently being ravaged by insects and disease that could possibly be helped with a long-term solution by this very technology yet you choose to reject it. Unbelievable. I would like to state that I oppose this bill because of the many .negative consequences this bill would have especially for Big Island farmers, but also agriculture researchers, consumers, the future of ALL local farmers. Thank you for the opportunity to submit tee simony in oppositic i to Bill 109 and Bill 113. Mark H. Kijima 241 Puanani Place p Comm, No.„.386• -` ff Kula, Hawaii 96790-8487 !/pSM TG — Ref To: Ref.
