Subject: Testimony in strong opposition to Bill No. 109
Aloha Hawaii County Council,
I have been a researcher and farmer in Hawaii since 1975. I am strongly opposed to Bill No. 109:
Genetically Modified or Engineered Organisms Prohibited. With the increasing impacts of global
warming and population increase, agriculture needs every scientifically sound tool available to address
these current and increasing challenges. The proposed ban would negatively impact Hawaii's agriculture
farming and research community and efforts to increase sustainable local food production. Federal
oversight of these technologies is in place and the global scientific community is largely supportive. The
County should not proceed with this unnecessary measure. I respectfully request that you vote "NO".
