Aloha,
I've been in the plant nursery business for 30 years and currently have 50+ employees. I have a degree in
Horticulture from UH. While I really have no problem with eating GMO plants or animals, it is not what I
know about the transgenic plants and animals that concerns me but what I don't know.
Economically, Hawaii island is uniquely positioned to remain GMO free whereas the balance of the
country and world is not. This would give our farmers a huge advantage competing for the world market
for non-GMO products.
There is plenty of opportunity on Oahu, Kauai, Molokai and Maui for seed companies and farmers to use
GMO products. There is no real need here except for Papaya farmers. They will be collateral damage if
the bills pass, if I read them correctly.
These bills preserve the opportunity for Hawaii Island to remain GMO free and a potent force in the
Organic food movement. If the worst case scenario develops and there is something truly bad with
GMO's, Hawaii Island could be the Arc that preserves non-contaminated species.
