Subject: Ban Michigan Fracking urges you to ban fracking
Dear Council:
I represent the nonprofit group Ban Michigan Fracking, here in Michigan. The state motto is. "If you
seek a pleasant peninsula, look about you." The state also calls its travel advertisements, come to "Pure
Michigan." Like Hawaii, we are a beautiful place, surrounded (almost all the way) by vast water. We are
the stewards of much of the world's fresh water, surrounded by Lakes Michigan, Huron, Superior and
Erie.
And yet, the oil and gas industry has its aim on expanding horizontal hydraulic fracturing--and its
legions of toxic wastes--across the entire Lower Peninsula, endangering our environment and the lives
of nearly 9 million people. Just one transnational company, Encana, has plans to put over 500 frack
wells and perhaps more than 1700.
We, as ordinary people, are coming together to fight this industrial invasion of frack wells, toxic
injection wells, compressor stations, pipelines, and the rest.
Do everything you can to protect your community from the threat of fracking. Only a ban on this
practice protect us from its devastating harms. "Regulated fracking" is fracking. It does nothing to
prevent the colossal loss of fresh water, turning it into toxic waste.
What will become of our children and future generations, and of life on the planet itself, if all of this
should come to pass, and place after place allows the frackers to destroy place after place'?
The time is critical and we must all make bold moves to stop the madness while there is still time.
Find a better way. Fracking is not the answer.
