HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOM 0385.158 2012-2014 COUNTY CLERK In support of Brenda Ford's Bill 109 2013 SEP _4 PM I: 33 I am a small farmer on Hawaii Island and I support Brenda Ford's Bill 109 which will prohibit all genetically modified organism crops on Hawaii Island. I am excited about this bill because it stands firm in disallowing GMO crops to be grown on Hawaii Island. In light of the contamination issues with GMO crops on the mainland and in other countries, it is to our advantage to take this opportunity and create a place for non-GMO crops to be grown for the health of our local environment and communities and also for export to expanding markets that demand non-GMO products. I support a transitional period for the GMO papaya industry to learn and incorporate new ways of growing and sustaining a non-GMO papaya crop. And similarly, I support a period for the GMO corn grown for livestock feed to transition out of using GMO varieties. Let's create an island that cares about it's people, food and environment. Let's produce GMO free products that thrive in the rise of local and global economies that are demanding those products. Let's take advantage of this opportunity and become the example for other islands, states, and nations. Let's prohibit all genetically modified organism crops on Hawaii Island. Sincerely with appreciation and aloha— Hilary Flaming Comm. No. 3:5: 157 Ref. To: P/ ra Ref. Date SEP o.6 2013
