Bill 109 Related to the Restriction of Genetically Modified Organisms
Bill 113 Related to Genetically Engineered Crops and Plants
Position: Opposed to Bill 109 and Opposed to Bill 113
Committee Chair Ford, Committee Vice Chair Wille and members of the Hawai'i County
Council,
My name is Kristen Ma. I oppose Bill 109 and Bill 113. The only thing "wrong" with GMOs is
that some people don't like them. Please don't allow the activists to dictate to farmers what
technology choices they have, and to researchers which tools they can use. Farmers who
grow our own Rainbow and SunUp papayas aren't doing anything wrong. It's past time that
they stopped being treated as if they were.
It's bad enough that some of these farmers have been the targets of vandals, who cut down
thousands of trees in 2010 and 2011. All they want is peaceful co-existence. Should it be so
much to ask, for the local farmers of GMO crops just to be left alone?
These bills are bad for farmers, for researchers, for consumers, and for the local farmers of
tomorrow, who today are our children. Please oppose Bill 109 and Bill 113. Thank you.
