Date SEP 2 3 2013 Green Point Nurseries, inc. Www.ggreenpoinrnur eP y.Lorn Testimony for the 9th Session Hawaii County Council 25 Aupuni Street,Room 1401, Hilo,HI 96720 Wednesday, September 4th, 2013 2:00pm Regarding Bill 109—An Ordinance Amending Chapter 14 of the Hawaii County Code,by Adding a New Article Relating to Genetically Engineered Crops and Plants Strongly Oppose Bill 109 My name is Jon Tanouye and I work at Green Point Nurseries, Inc.on the Big Island. My family is in our third generation of agribusiness,a business that produces Hawaii's cut flowers and foliage and tropical blooming plants. Our products are distributed and exported locally, nationally, and internationally. I have grown up with a foot in the door of the floriculture industry watching my grandfather and father grow Anthuriums. I have seen the changes in the colors and the varieties we have grown as well the trials and tribulations that have faced a grower from diseases and bad harvests. I have studied at the University of Hawaii to improve my skills in running a nursery. It is with this in mind that I have to oppose Bill 109 as I find that it would inhibit the tools and choices of farmers to make a living on the Big Island. Farmers need a choice on what to grow and how to grow. We need to think of the future and be able to make the best product we can. If you have any other questions at this time, I would be happy to discuss them and can be reached by phone at 808-959-3535 or email jon(agreenpointnursery.com.
