Dear County Council,
I am writing to urge you to vote against Bill 109. GMO products do not constitute any risk to our health.
If you think they do, you should be working for a ban on GMO foods, not crops. Surely people are much
more affected by the foods they eat than crops grown in farmers' fields. Most processed foods contain
corn sweeteners, and most corn today in the US is genetically modified. Anything containing soy also
probably contains genetically modified materials. If you think these foods are unhealthy, and you think
it is the county's job to guard Hawaii resident's health, then you should be pushing for an island-wide
ban on foods containing GMOs. You should be talking about what is in the supermarkets rather than on
the farms. If, on the other hand, you agree with the USDA, the EPA, the Centers for Disease Control,
and almost every agriculture professional that GMO foods are safe and healthy, you owe it to the
farmers to support local agriculture and vote against these bills.
Aloha,
