Bill 109 Related to the Restrictions of Genetically Modified Organisms
Bill 113 Related to Genetically Engineered Crops and Plants
Position: Opposed to Bill 109 and Bill 113
Committee Chair Ford, Committee Vice Chair Wille and members of the Hawaii County Council,
My name is Taryn Dizon and I am providing testimony in opposition to Bill 109 and Bill 113. After
reading the two Bills I feel that we are losing focus on real problems that our island's face and instead,
listing to misleading data and scare tactics that the Anti-GMO has displayed. Our island needs to focus
on what is killing our kids and that is; lead exposure, high levels of mercury in the fish, teen
pregnancies, and one of the worst issue on Hawai`i island is Driving Under the Influence. All of these
issues have actual data stating how many cases we face. To this day, I have not seen any factually
information that GMO's and the development of GMO's are unsafe. GMO's have been studied
intensively and highly regulated. Daily we consume or use some form of Genetically Modified
Organisms and we DEPEND on them. By illuminating GMO's you are going to start famine which is
already happening on Hawai`i island. If you want to restrict GMO's from being grown then you should
BAN it altogether and see how long the island will survive. Don't be a hypocrite and use GMO daily
including your gas and want to have restrictions on a highly regulated industry. If you truly want to
protect the county than you should regulate Organic farms as they can do whatever they want with no
repercussions.
I oppose the bill due to the many negative consequences this bill would have for Hawai`i Island famers,
agriculture research, consumers, and local farmers who don't have any other options but to farm.
Thank you for the opportunity to submit testimony in opposition to Bill 109 and Bill 113.
Sincerely,
Taryn Dizon
