Subject: Bills 109 &113
I strongly urge all council members to pass either bill 109, bill 113, or both bills. This
is a critical step towards a healthy sustainable future for Hawaii island. There is no
need for growing these crops on Hawaii island, as several crops that had been looked at
for genetic modification were turned down by local farmers, (taro & coffee) and the papaya
industry is a shadow of its pre-GM self. I am personally worried that without adequate
protection Hawaii island could find itself in a similar situation as Kauai and Molokai,
except ten fold due to the islands size.
I also support the ban on fracking that is up for debate in council as well. Hawaii
island should not have to bear the burden of being the states "energy quarter". Fracking
is unsafe at best, as proved by the large movement in the continental United States to ban
the practice due to the toxic chemicals used in the process and the toll it takes on the
environment, especially groundwater. We are lucky to live in a place with more than
enough clean energy such as wind and solar that we need not take such risks.
I am 28 years old, a resident of Hawaii island for 21 years. I currently reside in the
district of puna, which has been my home for 12 years. Both the GMO bills and the anti-
fracking measure have direct effect my daily life. Thank you for taking the time to
review public testimony on these very important maters.
