RESOLUTION NO. 200 13
A RESOLUTION URGING THE PLANNING DIRECTOR TO NAME THE ACCESS
ROAD TO THE WEST HAWAII VETERANS CEMETERY "KE ALA KOA," WHICH
TRANSLATES TO "THE TRAIL OF WARRIORS."
WHEREAS, effective July 24, 1998, Ordinance No. 98-82 officially named the West
Hawai`i Veterans Cemetery "West Hawai`i Veterans Cemetery-Pu`u Ho`omaha 0 Na Po`e Koa
O Hawai`i Komohana," which translates to "Resting Place (or cemetery) of the Warriors (or
soldiers) of West Hawai`i"; and
WHEREAS, on August 28, 2003, the Governor of the State of Hawai`i signed Executive
Order No. 3994 to set aside land identified as the "West Hawai`i Veterans Cemetery"to be under
the control and management of the County of Hawai`i; and
WHEREAS, the Department of Parks and Recreation manages and maintains the West
Hawai`i Veterans Cemetery-Pu`u Ho`omaha 0 Na Po`e Koa 0 Hawai`i Komohana(hereinafter
"West Hawai`i Veterans Cemetery"); and
WHEREAS, the access road into the West Hawai`i Veterans Cemetery is unnamed; and
WHEREAS, on February 5, 2013, representatives from the West Hawai`i Veterans
Council, Inc., requested that the access road to the West Hawai`i Veterans Cemetery be named;
and
WHEREAS, the West Hawai`i Veterans Council, Inc., consists of representatives from
Camp Tarawa Detachment#1255 of the Marine Corps League, the Big Island Retired Military
Association, the Korean War Veterans Association, the American Legion Department of
Hawai`i, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 12122; and
WHEREAS, on August 15, 2013, the Hawai`i County Veterans Advisory Committee
voted unanimously in favor of naming the access road to the West Hawai`i Veterans Cemetery
"Ke Ala Koa," which translates to "The Trail of Warriors"; and
WHEREAS, the County Council is authorized to initiate the naming of an existing street
by resolution pursuant to Section 14-85 of the Hawaii County Code; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that the
unnamed access road to the West Hawai`i Veterans Cemetery, as indicated on Exhibit A of this
resolution, be named "Ke Ala Koa."
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that the County Clerk shall transmit a copy of this
resolution to the Honorable Mayor William P. Kenoi, the Director of the Planning Department,
and the Director of the Department of Parks and Recreation.
