Dear Chairman Yoshimoto and Members:
The League of Women Voters of Hawai'i County works to promote open, accountable
and transparent government. There is a bill in the proposed resolution from the Hawaii
State Association of Counties that slams the door on these concepts.
The proposed bill to exempt County Council members from the Sunshine Law will allow
two or more Council members to meet privately and discuss Council matters. The bill,if
passed,would move County government to the closed and darkened back room.
The public cannot truly know how their elected representatives think and act if issues are
discussed, dissension is silenced, and votes are counted in private. Citizens do not need
sound bites; we need thoughtful discussion and actual facts.
The purpose of the Sunshine Law is to keep government open, accountable , representitve
and transparent. The proposed bill goes too far.
The League of Women Voters of Hawai'I County urges the Hawai'i County Coucil to
vote against the exemption of County Council Members from the Sunshine Law.
