your Committee on Public Works to which was referred Resolution
No . 485-88 , reports as follows :
The purpose of Resolution No . 485-88 is to request the State of
Hawaii Housing Finance and Development Corporation to include the
Kealakehe Regional Sports Complex as a community related use in the
development of the detailed master plan for the 1 ,536-acre site .
Your Committee finds that the Kealakehe Master Planned Community
final draft report prepared for the State of Hawaii Housing Finance
and Development Corporation and dated January 29, 1988, includes the
proposed Kealakehe Regional Sports Complex only in Concept Five of
the five draft concepts for development . Your Committee further
finds that while the Kealakehe Development focuses on housing needs ,
the anticipated population growth of West Hawaii indicates the need
for a Tegional sports complex .
Your Committee further finds that the capital improvement cost of a
regional sports complex is beyond the county ' s present resources .
Your Committee further finds that it is appropriate to request the
State to incorporate the regional sports complex in its plan for
Kealakehe.
Your Committee heard testimony from Mrs. Kiyono Kunitake in support
of Resolution No . 485-88, stating that the County is making the right
move in moving for the Kona Sports Complex [ at Kealakehe ] at this
time . She further testifed that the Old Kona Airport Park has no gym
in its plans but is designated open space .
Your Committee on Public Works is in accord wit ( the purpose of
Resolution No . 485-88 and reco mends it . dopt ' .n by the County
Council .
