HomeMy WebLinkAboutREP PWC 243 04/12/1988 1984-1988 REPORT OF THE CON ITTEE ON PUBLIC WORKS DATE: April 12, 1938 PLACE : Councilroom TIME: 1 : 30 p.m . 4 Chairman and Members Hawaii County Council _ Hilo, Hawaii 96720 Your Committee on Public Works to which was referred Resolution 'No . 428-88 , reports as follows: The purpose of Resolution No . 428-88 is to ask the Mayor to provide a standpipe at Hookena so that residents of South Kona can obtain water at no cost until either rainfall restores water supplies in catchment systems or until the Department of Water Supply installs a coin or token operated metering device at the standpipe . Your Committee understands that because water is a basic requirement for health and because South Kona has had a dry spell that is expected to last until June , a standpipe should be made available to provide potable water to residents with catchment systems . A Committee member requested staff to verify if other areas, such as Waiohinu, also need standpipes . A Committee member stated that Kona has three metered standpipes now, but individuals can ' t utilize delivery of 500 to 1 ,000 gallons at once and that the water , which costs the water hauler about one dollar fora gallon. A third member cautioned the Committee that people won 't buy a meter if they can get free water from the County . Your Committee understands that the provision of free water would be only a temporary measure . Your Committee concurs with providing a standpipe for Hookena and requests staff to check the need for standpipes in other areas of the island, before the next Council meeting.
