Your Committee on Public Works to which was referred Resolution
'No. 393-88, reports as follows:
The purpose of Resolution No. 393-88 is to urge the Governor to
release $275 ,000 for the design and construction of a traffic safety
signal system for the intersection of Kawili Street and Kapiolani
Street in Hilo.
Your Committee heard testimony from Dan Sakai , Principal of Waiakea
High School , on behalf of Waiakea High School and the Department of
Education. Mr . Sakai testified that traffic near Waiakea High School
is increasing . He stated that ten buses and seven vans bring 500
students to school and there are 500 assigned parking stalls at
school .
Your Committee received and read copies of Communication No. 921.07 ,
a letter from Edward J. Kormondy, Chancellor at the University of
Hawaii at Hilo expressing enthusiastic support for Resolution 393 .
Chancellor Kormondy stated that it was fortunate that accidents at
the intersection of Kawili Street and Kapiolani Street have involved
bent fenders and not lives . He cited his increasing concern over the
delay in getting a signal light .
Your Committee on Public Works is in accord with the purpose of
Resolution No. 393-88 and recommends its adoption by the County
Council .
