Arakaki And Members of the County Council County of Hawaii Hilo, HI 96720 Dear Chairman Arakaki and Council Members: It is my pleasure to nominate the following individuals to the 1999 Hawaii County Charter Commission: DISTRICT: HILO -Gary N. Yoshiyama is a lifetime resident of Hawaii and since 1975 has been with the Hawaii Government Employee's Association, and presently serves as its union representative. Mr. Yoshiyama is active in community affairs, having membership to the Hawaii Island United Way (HIUW) and the Big Island Labor Alliance (BILA). He states that he is not affiliated with any political party. HAMAKUA -George A. Martin is a lifetime resident of Hawaii and since 1994 has been a mechanic with Yamada & Sons. Prior to that, he was with the Hamakua Sugar Company (1983-1992). Mr. Martin is active in community affairs, having membership to the Ookala Community Association, the North Hilo Community Association, and is a volunteer instructor with the State of Hawaii hunter education program. He is a member of the Democratic Party. N/S KOHALA -John B. Ray is a 27-year resident of Hawaii and recently held office as an elected member of the Hawaii County Council and served four years (1994-1998). Mr. Ray is active in community affairs, having membership to the Family Support Services of West Hawaii, the Waimea Main Street, and the Waimea Salvation Army. He is a member of the Republican Party. Beginning January 4, 1999, he will be workin~~i~~ president of the Hawaii Leeward Planning Conference. /Y1AY file Ne. Herkes is a 50-year resident of Hawaii and since 1990 has been with the Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce and presently serves as its president. Ms. Herkes is active in community affairs, having membership to Five Mountain Medical Community, the HELCO Integrated Resource Planning Advisory Board, the Saddle Road Task Force, the Kona Rotary Club, the Pulama fa Kona, and the Big Island Business Council. She is a member of the Democratic Party. KA'U -John L. Santangelo is a 32-year resident of Hawaii and since 1976 has been the owner/manager at the Naalehu Fruit Stand and recently served as an elected member of the Hawaii County Council (1996-1998). Mr. Santangelo is active in community affairs, having membership to the Ka'u Lions Club, the Puna Federal Credit Union, the Vulcan Athletic Booster Club, the SCBM of Mt. View School, the Puna Rural Health Task Force, and is the chairperson of the MS Walk-a-Thon Committee. He is a member of the Republican Party. PUNA -Eddie M. Alonzo is a lifetime resident of Hawaii and since 1975 has been a mechanic with the Keaau Service Station, Inc. Mr. Alonzo is a former Hawaii County Council Member (July 1992-December 1992), and he served on the Planning Commission (1993-1997). He is a member and past president of the Filipino Chamber of Commerce, Big Island Chapter. He is a member of the Democratic Party. AT-LARGE: Susan S. Irvine of Hilo is a 26-year resident of Hawaii and since 1984 has been the Office Manager of Robert D. Irvine, MD, Inc. Mrs. Irvine is active in numerous community affairs which are listed in the appended exhibit. She states that she has no affiliation with any political party. Roland Higashi of Hilo is a lifetime resident of Hawaii and since 1971 has been the president of the Hawaii Printing Corporation. Mr. Higashi is active in community affairs, having membership to the Hawaii Island Chamber of Commerce, the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Hawaii, and is an honorary member of the Hilo Jaycees. He is a member of the Democratic Party. Dr. Daryl H. Kurozawa of Kona is a 28-year resident of Hawaii, and since 1994 has been self-employed in practice as a general surgeon. Prior to that, he was with the Oregon Health Sciences University as a resident in Surgery. Dr. Kurozawa is a member of the Rotary Club of Kona Mauka. He states that he has no political party affiliation. Chairman Arakaki and Council Members Page 2 December 22, 1998 Stephen A. Bess is a 45-year resident of Hawaii, and since 1995 has been the Dean of Students at Parker School. Prior to that, he was an attorney in private practice (1990-1995), and vice-president of Kaiser Development Co. in Honolulu (1981-1990). He states that he is not affiliated with any political party. We are interviewing more candidates for the fifth at-large seat, and that nomination will be forwarded to you very shortly. If approved, these individuals will serve until the amendments, if any, are ratified or rejected, and that date would be after the General Election in the year 2000.
