Dear Hawaii County Council,
I am writing to urge you not to vote for Bill 113.
The testimony that we've been hearing insists that all the agricultural companies, the regulatory
agencies, and the universities are all corrupt and in cahoots to promote a dangerous technology. This is a
fantasy. This is not 1961, when it was radical to think that we need to take care of the environment. That
was two generations ago. Environmentalism has gone mainstream and has been hugely successful. We
have the EPA, the Food and Drug administration, the clean air act, the clean water act, and the
endangered species act. More to the point, we have generations of young environmentally aware people
who have entered the professions of agriculture, biology, biotechnology, health, environmental
engineering, and other technically demanding fields. Our farmers are environmentalists too: I've never
met a farmer who didn't care for the land. These are the educated professionals who are telling you that
there is no danger in consuming GMO products. These are your neighbors, friends, and colleagues you
otherwise trust. Opposing them are the activists who have a personal need to be against something, and
GMO is the cause of the day. Please listen to those of us who have made a career of protecting the land
and growing our food because we care. Please stand up for our farmers and don't pass Bill 113.
