Testimony Bill 113
Hawaii County Council
Tuesday, Nov 5, 2013 — 2:00 PM
Dear Council:
As a retired agricultural worker from the sugar industry having years of experience in
both environmental and agricultural regulation from working with Amfacs'
environmental management division, I strongly urge you to not pass Bill 113.
Bill 113, as presented, completely ignores the current agricultural regulatory
environment and all the scientific evidence from around the world, presented to your
committee on the safety of genetically engineered crops over the past two months.
As pointed out to you, over these two months, there is no scientific harm that would call
for the banning of GMO (biotech) crops on Hawaii. To pass Bill 113, ignores all the
evidence from scientific testing throughout the world.
The results of the passage of Bill 113 will eventually eliminate the growing of all
commercial papaya on the island of Hawaii.
There are no papaya varieties in existence, other than the GMO varieties, that are
resistant the Papaya Ring Spot Virus. Passing Bill 113 will be the beginning of the
demise of the Big Island papaya industry, with the credit for the demise going to you.
Mark my words.
Respectfully submitted b, 4/1
