HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOM 0393.286 2012-2014 Page 1 of 1 Murashige, Laura From: Ellen Okuma [ellen.okuma @gmail.com] Sent: Sunday, November 03, 2013 11:24 PM To: mwille @co.hawaii.hi.us; counciltestimony @ co.hawaii.hi.us; zkern @co.hawaii.hi.us; vpoindexter @co.hawaii.hi.us; dkanuha @co.hawaii.hi.us Subject: Support Bill 113 Aloha, As a resident of Mountain View and a concerned citizen, I am asking the County Council and especially the Chairs and Vice Chairs of the Agriculture, Water and Energy Sustainability Committee and the Environmental Management Committee to vote FOR Bill 113 for several reasons: • the high likelihood that GMO crops could cross-pollinate with non-GMO food crops such as those that are certified organic, which is what I and many others in the Puna District eat • as a backyard farmer trying to grow healthy, organic or natural foods for my family to help decrease our State's reliance on imports (approximately 90% of our food is imported), I don't want my own food crops to be contaminated by GMO pollen drift • a lack of general agreement that scientific evidence has proven GMO crops are safe for animal (dairy cattle, for example) and human consumption • some countries prohibit GMO imports, which would negatively impact subsets of our County's agricultural industry • taro and coffee farmers have already banned GMO in their segment of the agricultural industry without adverse impacts I realize this is a hard issue to consider but, until more is known about the positive and negative effects of GMO crops, please vote FOR Bill 113.
