Testimony Bill 113
Final Council Hearing—November 5, 2013

Points to Consider:
• Mahalo to Council for listening to all sides and being able to achieve a"clear
compromise" in Bill 113 that includes exemptions for all GE crops on Hawai'i
Island at this time and a clear pathway for these crops should they be needed in an
emergency in the future.
• We need to keep in mind that GE crops are a recent addition to "the agricultural
toolbox" and have yet to reveal the true long-term challenges and unforeseen
consequences they present to our current agricultural systems. This Bill will help us
put in place restrictions and pathways for any future GE crops that will protect our
current and future agricultural crops.
• I don't see a clear need for an Ad-Hoc Committee at this time, but if one is needed
for a defined reason, it should have clear directives and goals, a balanced group and
a clear timetable.
Aloha,
Nancy Redfeather
