I live at 310 B Ululani Street, Hilo, 96720; phone 808-969-3103. I am writing to ask that the County Council pass proposed BillI 113, restricting the use of GMO agriculture on the Big Island. There is abundant evidence that GMO agricultural practices have negative long-term effects on agriculture and the communities in which they are used; more than 60 nations have passed restrictions on GMO crops. Our local newspaper, The Hawaii Tribune Herald, recently ran a compelling article on the impacts of Monsanto GMO seeds and pesticides in Argentina, where the amount of pesticides used has increased ninefold, and with it rates of cancer and birth defects. Monsanto had made promises that use of GMO crops would reduce pesticide use. The Big Island has a fragile, vulnerable environment. What is lost can not be brought back. If we want a healthy, sustainable agrigricultural future, as well as clean air and water for the people who live here, we need to ensure that GMO agriculture does not take over. The only way to do this is through effective government regulation. Thank you for your time and attention to this very important issue! Please pass Bill 113! Best regards, Jeanne Ryan Comm.No. '393. 3 00 Ref.To: P i l'OiI n c r/ Ref. Date NOV 5 nit 11/4/2013
