Dear Testimony Committee,
I am writing in support of changing the legal smoking age of tobacco from 18 to 21
years old.As someone who has seen people suffer greatly from cancers caused by smoking,
I feel strongly about this bill.As I was growing up I was fortunate enough to have family
members who never smoked around me, my sisters,and cousins. But even though people
in my family don't smoke people around me still do. These people also have impacted my
life because they have made it an easier decision not to smoke. Seeing people smoke has
helped me not smoke because they smell bad and the tar from the cigarettes builds up their
lungs.These are some of the reasons I think the legal smoking age should be changed.

Dear Testimony Committee,
I am writing to strongly support raising the age for the sale of tobacco in the County of Hawaii to age
21. I have not seen anyone at age 12-17 smoke in my life. Smoking should not be at age 12-17 because
in your teens, smoking can cause bronchitis, pneumonia and other lung diseases. Tobacco can harm
unborn babies and newborn babies. Tobacco is dangerous for three reasons it can cause heart attack,
cancer and asthma.
The younger the kids are when they start smoking, the more addicted they get and they might never be
able to stop. Not many people smoke around me. My uncle smoked everyday for this life since he was
a teenageryand he is now 38 years old. During parties and whenever he has free time, he is smoking and
he says he cannot stop.
That's why I think we should raise the age to purchase tobacco to 21 years old.

I think tobacco sells should go up to the age of 20 because 1r-will-have a chance to
decide what they want to do in life. Then most of them will decide what to do in life
before they smoke. Less people will die/and a lot of people will be working. Tobacco use
kills nearly 400,000 Americans every year 95 % of whom start smoking before the age of
21 Island, 19.6%of young adults, ages 18 to 24 and 9.1% smoke. T®bacco companies
target young adults between 18 to 21 years old. For the safe health of your youth
residents please join together in support of this effort to reduce the harmfull long term
effects of tobacco in ,our Filgisland community.

How Smoking Affects My Life
When I was in sixth grade, my family had suffered a loss, my grandfather,also known as
Papi,died from lung cancer. He was 61 years old. Before he started smoking though,he was in the
military and helped out in the Vietnam War and he ended up getting a double dose of asbestosis. He
would put out fires on the war aircrafts which lead him to be exposed to Agent Orange and
asbestos.As time went on, he started smoking which lead him to be really sick for a long time.
When things started getting really bad for Papi, he went to the hospital and found out that he had
terminal lung cancer.To keep him alive for a little while,the doctors did a surgery which consisted
of taking out half of his left lung.Soon after, Papi passed away,which was a day before I went to
California to see him before he died. It was really sad and I regret not seeing him one last time. It's
like him smoking these cigarettes shortened his life even more so and now he can't see his children
and grandchildren grow up. Besides Papi, I have more than five people in my family who smoke. My
little brother has asthma from being around smoke from cigarettes/cigars my step father has been
smoking since my brother was born.
I believe that Hawaii County should raise the age of sale of tobacco products to 21. I say this
because tobacco use is the number-one preventable cause of death in the United States meaning
that people wouldn't have to die if they didn't smoke in the first place.Smoking causes cancer, heart
disease,lung disease and stroke,it may be because more than 60 of the chemicals in cigarettes can
cause cancer.Smoking also causes 87 percent of all lung cancer deaths and more than 440,000
people in the United States die each year from diseases caused by tobacco. Did you know that
nearly half of all smokers who keep smoking will die from tobacco use and that more people die
from tobacco-related illness than from AIDS, car accidents,illegal drugs,murders,and suicide
combined?That sounds really scary. My final piece of evidence is that secondhand smoke kills more
than 53,000 people every year and children of parents who smoke have more colds,flu, ear
infections and asthma attacks.
I really hope you do consider changing the law of tobacco sales so that my generation and other
generations can have healthy lives.

Should the age of smoking tobacco be raised to age 21?
I think smoking tobacco should be raised to age 21 because smoking is bad for
everyone's health and smoking will damage your body. Smoking tobacco at a young age
will become extremely addictive for a teenager that is only 18 years old. Smoking will
not only harm the smoker but it will harm a non smoker as well. Most 18,year old
teenagers have siblings that look up to them and if they see that they are smoking then it
will be most likely for them to start smoking at a young age as well. When a person is 18
they are still considered to be a teenager. At age 21, they are considered a young adult
because at age 21 most young adults become independent and they have all right to do
what they want to their body.
Many people at the age of 18 are still in high school and when you have immature
18 year olds who allowed to smoke because they are able to buy tobacco then they might
bring it to school and give some to their friends who are still not allowed to buy cigarettes
because they are still not 18. In my opinion, smoking should be illegal to use at any age
because of the damage it does to people's health teens that start smoking at an early age,
will eventually die as a result from smoking.

The Truth Behind Tobacco
Tobacco is a huge issue today, not only in America, but all over the world. I
personally have smokers in my family, and it does scare me to know what they're doing
to their bodies. I have even lost a family member because of the effects of cigarettes. That
is why we need to come together to make a difference and stop people from doing this
nasty habit.
The thing that concerns me the most it that eighty eight percent of smokers start
before the age of eighteen. Also, smokers potentially loose roughly thirteen years of their
lives. This means that all these teens who start smoking at such a young age are basically
throwing their lives away.
Secondly, smoking doesn't just affect the smoker. It affects everyone around
them. Smokers give off second, and third hand smoke. Some sources say that second
hand smoke is even worse than smoking a cigarette yourself When you inhale second
hand smoke, you are ingesting all the toxins that cigarettes have in them. Such as acetone,
tar, batteries, and even cleaning disinfectants. Third hand smoke is also just as bad. Third
had smoke can stain walls, and leave its harmful toxins on furniture and carpets. This
type of smoke is primarily a problem to younger kids that are closer to the ground. Also
because of this pets are being found with cancers that humans have from smoking.
Based on my opinion, I think that the cigarette companies do not care about what
their products are doing to people. They try to target specific brands to specific people.
For example, menthol cigarettes are to be "flavored" like mint. Also, they way cigarettes
are packaged in such small decorative boxes could appeal more to women. I also think
that children today get a wrong impression about cigarettes. In "family" movies, many
characters smoke, which could alter their minds to think that it's okay.
In conclusion, I'd like to add that cigarettes are not helping anyone. Like I
mentioned above, I've lost a family member due to their choice of smoking. When you
inhale that cigarette you are risking you life for things like cancer, asthma, and many
other health complications. If smokers keep continuing to live their lives the way that
they are, I know for a fact that they will not like the outcome. I personally value my life
and to see a smoker pretty much throw their life away makes me hope they soon wake up
and see what they are doing to their lives.

The good benefits of tobacco? None. Many people smoke tobacco, whether its
cigarettes or simply chewing it. The age at which tobacco can be purchased is at-18 and
over. But did you know that about 3,600 teens and children start smoking tobacco before
the age of 18? Also about 900 of them form a habit of smoking it on a daily basis?
In my life no one in my family smoked cigarettes, or chewed tobacco. We all
knew the harm it can cause to our health. But many people around the island smoke
everyday! On the island there are about 20.5% of Kona alone that smoke cigarettes.
Tobacco is a real addiction, a real problem.
A few weeks ago in health class a guest speaker came to talk about tobacco. Her
name was Brenda,She smoked for twenty years but was able to quit. When she talked I
could hear the disgust in her voice, the way she talked about tobacco; it was as if it
disgusted her. She talked about how it affected her skin, her voice, her energy, and her
addiction. She smoked a pack everyday, but she told us that she didn't even like it; that
she didn't enjoy it at all. But she was just addicted.
Smoking causes many health problems like cancer with the lungs, kidney,
stomach and even your pancreas. It can hurt even the people around us,just by
secondhand smoke. There are so many problems with smoking tobacco. Hopefully, the
people that smoke realize how much of an impact it is on their lives. It's never impacted
my life in a positive or negative way, but seeing so many people smoke away their life;
that's enough to convince me never to smoke.

I am writing this to bring to your attention our current tobacco smoking laws. I believe
that becoming an adult can be very overwhelming and intimidating. This makes it very easy to
take the path which often leads to smoking addictions. That is why it is my belief that a person
should not be allowed to purchase tobacco until the age of 21. It has been proven that someone
who has never smoked by the age of 18 has the odds of 3-1 that they never will,and someone
who has never smoked by the age of 21 has the odds of 20-1, a greatly decreased risk. It is true
that not smoking when below the age of 21 does not mean the easy addiction ever goes away.
However, peer pressure will and I believe if fewer are given the option to smoke when they
graduate high school that a large percentage of them never will. 95%of the United States
tobacco caused deaths in a year started to smoke regularly before the age of 21. This has
strengthened my belief that if not allowed to purchase tobacco until 21, many lives can be saved.

How Smoking has Impacted My Life
The impact that smoking has had on my life was a negative impact. The reasons
why it has had that negative impact was because my grandma has never smoked in her
life, but died from a cancer that formed from second hand smoke from my grandpa who
used to smoke. Second hand smoke is also a known cause of sudden infant death
syndrome; it is when you inhale smoke from another person who smokes. Second hand.
smoke costs the US economy more than $10 billion annually. When my morn used to
smoke, I used to, and still do hate the smell of cigarette smoke, it gives me an instant
headache. I'm so thankful that she quit smoking for a couple of months now since she
found out that one of her medical problems requires her not to go anywhere near
cigarettes, if not it can get really serious. I also had an uncle who used to be a heavy
smoker and he died. For every one person that dies from a smoking related disease, 20
more people will suffer with at least one serious illness from smoking. Tobacco scars
your lungs and can cause lung disease that can't sometimes be cured. "In Hawaii, 16.8%
of the adult populations are current cigarette smokers. 19.7% of men in Hawaii smoke

I Believe that the legal age to buy tobacco products should be changed to 25.
I would support the age to sell tobacco be changed to 25 because that is the age your parents
trust you with their precious things/inheritance like land and family heirlooms. If you are old enough to be
trusted with this then you are old enough to choose whether or not you truly want to waste your life on
smoking a cigarettes or not.
If the age is twenty five it will cover the "experimental" age (18-21) and the late people who
are still developing the frontal lobe . This will reduce the 19.6% that smoke in hawaii If the age is 25
you are more likely to be married, employed and graduated from college lowering the likelihood to start
smoking. If you are 25 before you are allowed to start smoking you can also force to change the
marketing strategy for the tobacco companies and force them to pay more for marketing surveys and
marketing research.
In conclusion I John Harrington highly support the bill for the age 21 and even more believe you
should put one together for the age of 25.

The Impact of Smoking Has Had On Me.
My name is John Harrington but most people call me Jack, I am a seventeen year old guy born
and raised on the Island of hawaii and I have seen the effects of smoking throughout my
whole life and the horrible things that came out of it.
The first experience I had of smoking is my uncle that I have visited once in a while but I knew
nothing about him since I was so young(seven or eight years old ) when he had-died of smoking related

because the smell of smoke makes my eyes water„_
My third experience is with those cigarete butt's which I have always seens since I was young
and always thought them as bad and disgusting things that were bad for the environment,.dfany times
I had gone out to clean them up whether it be on my own or with one the organizations I belong to like
the BSA. For the last experience I would want to share with you is the one that hits closests to home ,
which is that smoking even happens at school, the smell is plain as days and the smell is horrific and
people is getting expelled because of it they were not able to walk the line even thought they were good
students and atheletes.
In conclusion I personally dislike smoking because there has not been any benefits , long and
