Your Committee on Public Works, to which was referred
Communication 272, relating to a sign variance request for the
Kohala Ranch Project, reports as follows:
Communication 272 is a letter from Belt Collins & Associates which
requests, on behalf of Kohala Joint Ventures, that the Council grant
a sign variance permitting the erection of two 1 .5 feet by 12 feet
long illuminated ground signs at each of two entrances to the
development .
Your Committee, in reviewing this request, has requested and received
comments from the Department of Public Works . Communication 272.1
from Chief Engineer Hugh Ono concludes that 1 ) the number of signs
proposed by the applicant is within the intent of the County Code and
2 ) that the size of each proposed sign is beyond the allowable
provisions of the sign code . Communication 272.2 from
Herbert Hayama, Chief of the Building Division, provides additional
information that Belt Collins & Associates , on behalf of Kohala Joint
Ventures , has submitted revised plans which reduce its ground signs
to 8 square feet .
Your Committee on Public Works, having reviewed the amended request,
finds that the applicant requires a variance to erect two 8 square
foot signs at each of the two entrances to the development. Your
Committee concurs with the Chief Engineer that the number of proposed
signs is within the intent of the code. Your Committee therefore
recommends that the Council of the County of Hawaii grant a sign
variance for two 8 square foot signs at each of two entrances to the
Kohala Ranch Development .
