Your Committee on Public Works , to which was referred
Communication 1741 , 1741 .1 and 93 relating to a sign variance
request reports as follows:
Communication 1741 is a letter from Ka 'u Agribusiness Company, Inc.
which requests , on behalf of International Air Service Corp .
( IASCO) , a variance to the provisions of Chapter 3 , Hawaii County
Code 1983 for four IASCO owned signs .
Pursuant to Chapter 3 , Section 3-5 , Hawaii County Code 1983 the
Council may grant a variance to the sign ordinance upon finding that
enforcement of the provisions of the code would work a hardship upon
the applicant , and that the granting of a variance would not be
contrary to the spirit and purpose of the County sign ordinance and
the public interest .
The Committee on Public Works has reviewed the comments of the
Department of Public Works with respect to this sign variance
request . At our meeting of January 29 , 1985 during the Committee 's
initial consideration of this variance request , there were
reservations . Subsequently, Mr . Paul G. Bennett , Vice President,
Diversified Services , ISACO, has advised in Communication 93 that
the eight foot setback requirement has been complied with and that
IASCO is willing to comply with the one sign per tax map key
limitation . IASCO is further able to reduce the size of their signs
from 20 square feet to 12 square feet while maintaining the
integrity of the sign but still requires a size variance .
Your Committee on Public Works apppreciates IASCO's willingness to
comply with the provisions of the County Code . Your Committee finds
that if IASCO does reduce its present signs from 20 square feet to
12 square feet as indicated in Communication 9 a size variance
will still be required. Your Committee believes , is size reduction
to be an acceptable alternative and them»• e , r •commends approval
