Subject: GMO ad hoc committee
Public Safety and Mass Transit Committee.
Aloha
I'm so happy the council and the mayor listened to the people and passed a bill to ban GMOs!
We still have a long way to go to be living completely GMO FREE, and now we are on the right path to
leave our children a better island!
Here is my testimony on the things I would like to see the Ad Hoc Committee do
sunset GMO corn within a year so we can move closer to sustainability!
I've heard that GMO corn is being grown to feed cows! Please see the middle of the movie King Corn to
see what corn does to cows stomachs! Its horrible! They are not meant to eat corn. So why are we
polluting our island to make cows sick and then feed their milk to our children?!
There is a better way!
—Develop a plan on what it would take for the whole island to be GMO free,
as well as
—a plan as to what benefits and consequences could occur in a few generations if we continue to grow
GMO food,
for instance, one consequence is small Hawaiian families trying to grow their own food an live off the land
having to pay $3 per plant to find out if the papayas they are growing are contaminated with GMOs, which
would lead to GMO's being eaten involuntarily. I have heard that GMO bacteria continues to be replicated
in the intentional tract, is that true?
I would like to see big AG(Monsanto, DuPont, Papaya Associations, whoever is profiting most from GMO
papayas,)
Be the ones to pay for testing people's papaya trees
Poor People shouldn't have to pay to be sure they aren't eating GMOs!
Come up with a plan for helping GMO papaya farmers switch to non GMO crops
I also think its important that the county, and perhaps this ad hoc committee, come up with a plan on how
this county can meet our sustainability goals, and find out if there is any sense in having GMO's if we are
going to be a self sufficient island. I think we all know we need to be moving in that direction.
How long do you think we can continue to import 90% of our food?
Why should we when we know that the Hawaiians were able to supply 100% of their food, and with less
degradation, and more Aloha for da 'aina!
Young people need more opportunities to go in this direction.
Mahalo nui loa for supporting and strengthening our community! Comm. No. 39‘,'
