RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, pursuant to County Charter Section 3-14 interim amendments
to the Salary Ordinance may be by resolution;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII
that the Salary Ordinance is hereby amended for the following department:
FEDERAL/STATE/COUNTY-PROJECT FUNDED POSITIONS (EXHIBIT B)
SECTION 8.03. FAMILY SUPPORT DIVISION. OFFICE OF THE CORPORATION COUNSEL
1. Reallocate one position of Legal Stenographer SR-14 to Senior
Legal Stenographer SR-16.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be transmitted
to the departments of Corporation Counsel, Finance and Civil Service for
their information.

The duties of a Senior Legal Stenographer are currently being '
performed by this Legal Stenographer.

1. Plans, supervises, maintains files and records in the Division 8%
2. Prioritizes and assigns work to stenographers 25%
3. Supervises maintenance of inventory of supplies 1%

5. Evaluate performance of stenographers and counsel them 20%
6. Plan with the supervising attorney the updating of all office

The Family Support Division has two legal stenographers and three
clerk stenographers. There is no senior legal stenographer to : •
handle supervisory duties.

Due to the -66 . 65% reimbursement of salaries in th,e Corporation
Counsel, Family Support Division and the added 13 .5o. incentives
being obtained from the Federal Government on the child support
collections, the additional salary of the reallocated position
will not cost the County of Hawaii any monies. •

LEGAL STENOGRAPHER
Duties Summary:
Performs independently a variety of legal stenographic and clerical
work in a .legal office; and performs other related duties as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
This class differs from that of Senior Legal Stenographer in that the
Legal Stenographer independently performs legal stenographic and clerical tYork
and may supervise the work of others; whereas the Senior Legal Stenographer
supervises and participates in providing secreta•.ial and stenographic services
to a staff of attorneys.
•
Illustrative Examples of Work:
Takes and transcribes dictations on, or types from rough draft, matters
such hs letters, reports, legal opinions , resolutions, ordinances, briefs and
affidavits; prepares and types legal forms and documents; interviews and screens
applicants for legal• assistance; sets up and maintains files ; takes and trans-
cribes verbatim statements ; testimonies and proceedings; checks citations from
legal sources and searches files for reference data; maintains records; inventories
supplies; may supervise the work of others.
Minimum Qualification Requirements:
Training and Experience: .1 combination of education and experience
substantially equivalent to graduation from high school and 4 years of clerical
experience of which 2 years shall have involved legal work including stenography.
Knowledge of: commonly used legal terms, procedures, practices and
forms; types of court actions and methods of court procedures; office practices
and procedures.
•
Ability to: take dictation at a rate of 110 words per minute and
• transcribe notes accurately; type accurately and rapidly; maintain legal records;
deal effectively with employees and the public.
Health and Physical Ce„dition:
Persons seeking appointment to positions in this class must meet the
health and physical condition standards deemed necessary and proper for perform-
ance of the duties.
This is an amendment to the specification for the class
LEGAL STENOGRAPHER which was approved on August 19, 1957.
