RESOLUTION No. 217 86
WHEREAS , the Kona-Kohala Coast is in the midst of dynamic growth
aimea at making West Hawaii a visitor mecca with international
appeal and indications are that more development will follow; and
WHEREAS, this unparalled cornmittment by private interests to
improve the Big Island as a tourist destination should be welcomed
by the public sector with both gratitude and enthusiasm; and
WHEREAS, the single most meaningful way that government can show
its support for this development is to proceed with the expansion of
Keahole Airport so that fully-loaded , wide bodied aircraft may use
this facility ; and
WHEREAS, improvement to the length and strength of the runways
at Keahole should proceed as soon as possible so that new visitors
who come here can experience a standard of excellence in our
facilities that may attract them to return thereby improving
Hawaii ' s image and economic base.
NOW , THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it recognizes the significance of timely improvements to
Keahole Airport and strongly urges the Governor, the State
Legislature, the State Department of Planning and Economic
Development and the State Department of Transportation to proceed
with these improvements.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii is
hereby instructed to transmit copies of this resolution to the
Honorable Governor George R. Ariyoshi ; the Honorable Senator Richard
Wong, President of the State Senate; the Honorable Henry H. Peters ,
Speaker of the State House of Representatives ; the Director of the
State Department of Planning and Economic Developoment ; the Director
of the State Department of Transportation; the Honorable Dante K .
Carpenter, Mayor of Hawaii County and the President of the
Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce .
