RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, the Hawaii County Council is aware of the increasing problem of
marijuana cultivation occurring throughout the State of Hawaii, and supports law
enforcement efforts to eliminate this illegal activity; and
WHEREAS, in a 1985 statewide drug sweep effort, 80 percent of the State's
total marijuana seizures were from the Big Island; and
WHEREAS, the establishment of a full-time federal drug office on the Big
Island would provide a deterrence to the illegal cultivation of marijuana; and
WHEREAS, the United States Senate Appropriations Subcommittee has
appropriated $144,000 for a U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration office on the
Big Island.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that
it urges Congress to support the $144,000 appropriation for the establishment of
a U.S. Drug Enforcement°Administration office within the County of Hawaii.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii transmit
copies of this resolution to the Honorable Daniel K. Inouye, U.S. Senate, the
Honorable Spark M. Matsunaga, U.S. Senate, the Honorable Daniel K. Akaka,
U.S. House of Representatives, the Honorable Neal Smith, Chairman, Subcommittee
on Commerce, State, Justice and Judiciary, U.S. House of Representatives, and
Mr. John C. Lawn, Administrator, U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.
