The entire rationale and justification for this measure is that the County has an apparent public trust obligation to protect our "organic" food supplies from possible pollution or contamination, in this case by non-organically grown crops. The Bill as proposed contains not a single shred of scientific evidence or support that this has happened or will happen or could happen on Hawaii island. And in quite the contrary example, the Bill exempts GMO papaya production because of its pervasiveness, but apparently in this very specific example there has not been any evidence of the horrors of GMO contamination the Council is so eager to forestall. The official scientific agencies with responsibilities for examination of food production safety has not found evidence of what the Council alleges, and have basically determined that organic and non-organic crops are essentially the same. The real motive behind this Bill has more to do with social engineering than science. Please vote "no" on this misconstrued and fear inducing Bill. Thank you, John Mason Kailua-Kona Comm.
