Subject: Bill 113 GMO
Aloha to all Council members,
I have been a farmer in Kona for thirty five years, grown coffee, mac nuts, flowers, tomatoes, ti,
house plants, and landscaping trees, etc and still do. The farmers of Hawaii know how important
diversity is, how important the balance of nature is in keeping their crops vigorous and healthy,
or not. They also know how difficult it is for the small farmer to export produce from Hawaii so
that makes the local market even more important, in addition to there being a ban on GMO grown
produce in many countries and more all the time. Most agriculture in Hawaii nei is done by the
small family farmers and especially here on the big island, in many places it is all we have for an
economy.
The council must consider the local people who work the land, we don't feel that mega agriculture
has a place here, factory food is out of place in paradise. Were proud of what we grow and want
the visitors to Hawaii to have the opportunity to go to the farmer's markets for our produce, find
locally food in the markets and floral shops. You should help us to grow that pride, not sell us out
to big business/big ag. Your aunties and uncles, mothers and fathers worked the land, and many
of your o'hana still do.
Please represent all that is good on our island, keep it local, keep it healthy, help maintain what is
beautiful and unspoiled and natural, show your aloha to the aina by voting Yes on GMO bill 113.
