RESOLUTION NO. 2S 14
A RESOLUTION URGING THE HAWAII STATE LEGISLATURE TO PASS SENATE
BILL NO. 2920 AND HOUSE BILL NO. 2469 TO ADDRESS THE THREAT OF THE
LITTLE FIRE ANT.
WHEREAS, Senate Bill No. 2920 and House Bill No. 2469 will fund a pilot project
under the Hawai`i County Department of Parks and Recreation to address the rapid spread of the
invasive species known as the little fire ant; and
WHEREAS, Hawai`i County has started treatment of sites infested with the little fire ant
at County parks; and
WHEREAS, Senate Bill No. 2920 and House Bill No. 2469 will allow for the treatment
of additional public lands; and
WHEREAS, the little fire ant threatens the health and safety of Hawai`i's people,
livestock, pets, and native species; and
WHEREAS, the spread of the little fire ant to Kaua`i, Maui, and O`ahu heightens the
need for the State to develop model strategies to eradicate the threat of the little fire ant that can
be implemented statewide; and
WHEREAS, the pilot project will address the threat by developing strategies to combat
the little fire ant on all islands and will include the hiring of necessary personnel, purchasing
three different types of pesticides, and equipment maintenance; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that the
House and the Senate are urged to approve Senate Bill No. 2920 and House Bill No. 2469 to
address the threat of the little fire ant in the State of Hawai`i.
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that the County Clerk shall transmit a copy of this
resolution to the Honorable Governor Neil Abercrombie; the Honorable Senate President Donna
Mercado Kim; the Honorable Speaker Joseph M. Souki; the Honorable Senator David Y. Ige; the
Honorable Senator Mike Gabbard; the Honorable Senator Will Espero; the Honorable Senator
Clarence K. Nishihara; the Honorable Senator Josh Green; the Honorable Senator Donovan M.
Dela Cruz; the Honorable Senator Gilbert Kahele; the Honorable Senator Malama Solomon; the
Honorable Representative Sylvia Luke; the Honorable Representative Jessica Wooley; the
Honorable Representative Clift Tsuji; the Honorable Representative Della Au Belatti; the
Honorable Representative Chris Lee; the Honorable Representative Cindy Evans; and the
Honorable Representative Tom Brower.
