Subject: Personal Testimony about Bill 113
Aloha,
My name is Kimberly Furumo and I am a resident of Hilo. I am writing today to voice my
opinion about Bill 113. I am against the Bill and hope that you will vote against it. There is no
evidence to suggest that GMO products are dangerous for human consumption. If the bill is
passed, many farmers may find it too difficult to continue to grow crops that are greatly needed
on the Big Island. As an Island community, we are already at risk since much of our food
supply must be shipped in by boat or plane. Bill 113 would confound this problem by
discouraging new farms and possibly running existing farms out of business.
The reason that most people use for not wanting GMO foods is that they are worried it will
sicken them. There is no evidence of this after many years of GMO foods in the food chain.
And, many people are sickened by organic and non-GMO foods every year. So that argument
does not hold up.
My concerns are related to the survival of the people of Hawaii and specifically the Big Island.
If a terrorist group bombs the LA harbor and foods cannot be delivered to Hawaii, the store
shelves would be empty with a few weeks. If our food growing policies are too restrictive,
farmers will no longer be incentivized to produce food locally, and we could experience life-
threatening shortages.
