We, the farmers of the Lalamilo Farmlots, DQ NOTT SUPPORT Bill 113. Although Councilwoman
Willie has made an alleged statement to the contrary, the majority of us flaw support her
bill.
Our concerns about Bill 913 is that the future direction of commercial seed development will
most likely be genetically modified because if expedites the process for developing resistant
hybrids. However, Bill 11.3 would eliminate this seed source and severely handicap the Big
Island Farmers. Another critical concern is that this bill will put a stop to the University of
Hawaii conducting research to develop resistant hybrids for the tomato spotted wilt virus on
lettuce crops here on the Big Island. Recently it was confirmed that some farms in Lalamilo
have a virus (club root)that infects cabbages, broccoli, and cauliflowers, which will destroy up
to 90%of the crop. Resi5 taut seed, should it be available today, would likely be genetically
modified!
We would greatly appreciate, that you base your decision on science for the future of Big
Island agriculture.
