truM � '. <br /> COUNTY OF HAWAII " w:.* STATE OF HAWAII <br /> off.• <br /> RESOLUTION NO. 289 14 <br /> A RESOLUTION URGING THE HAWAII STATE LEGISLATURE TO APPROVE <br /> SENATE BILL NO. 2941 AND HOUSE BILL NO. 2521, WHICH APPROPRIATE <br /> FUNDS TO MANAGE HAZARDOUS TREES. <br /> WHEREAS, hazardous trees compromise safe access and usability of transport routes <br /> for citizens and emergency and public safety services; and <br /> WHEREAS, according to the Hawai`i Fire Department, from 2013 to 2014 there were <br /> 5,149 calls for emergency services in the Puna district; and <br /> WHEREAS, the Puna district, with its challenging infrastructure, limited arterial streets, <br /> and large geographical expanse, has the highest inundation rates of dangerous Albizia trees in the <br /> State of Hawai`i, according to the Big Island Invasive Species Committee; and <br /> WHEREAS, Senate Bill No. 2941 appropriates $5,000,000 for the removal of hazardous <br /> Albizia trees and for the treatment of non-hazardous Albizia trees to at least 150 feet from <br /> portions of selected roadways; and <br /> WHEREAS, House Bill No. 2521 appropriates funds from general revenues for the <br /> purpose of cutting, trimming, or removing trees that pose a hazard to other properties; now, <br /> therefore, <br /> BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that it <br /> hereby urges the Hawai`i State Legislature to approve Senate Bill No. 2941 and House Bill No. <br /> 2521, which will appropriate funds to manage, treat, and control hazardous trees. <br />
