No. 611 PLACE: Council Chambers Hilo, Hawai`i TIME: 4:07 p.m. Council Chair and Members Hawai`i County Council Hilo, Hawai`i 96720 Your Committee on Finance, to which was referred Communication No. 611, reports as follows: Communication No. 611, transmitted by Mayor William P. Kenoi, dated January 7, 2014, requests review and favorable recommendation of the nomination of Mr. George "David"Nahuina to the Merit Appeals Board. Mr. Nahuina is a 47-year resident of Hawai`i. He is presently employed as a teacher by the Department of Education at Kealakehe Intermediate School. Mr. Nahuina is also a youth basketball coach and a member of the Instructional Leadership Team. He states that he is not affiliated with any political party. If confirmed, Mr. Nahuina will serve a term that expires on December 31, 2018. Ms. Charmaine Shigemura, Executive Assistant to Mayor Kenoi, came forward and provided background information, expressed the Mayor's support, and requested Council's favorable action of this appointment. Council Members Kanuha and Eoff expressed their support of the nominee's appointment to the commission. Mr. Nahuina is not required to be present at full Council for final confirmation. Pursuant to Hawai`i Revised Statutes, Sections 76-14, 47, 51, 71, 75 and Hawai`i County Charter Section 7-1.2.(a), there shall be a Merit Appeals Board, consisting of five members who shall be appointed by the mayor and confirmed by the council. Your Committee on Finance is in accord with the purpose and intent of Comm.
