I practice organic gardening at my house, and have the goal of 25% food independence by January 2015. I strongly support Bill 113, and would like to humbly request that you support the bill as well. Here are a few reasons why I support Bill 113: 1) Economic- GMO companies like Dupont and Monsanto have greatly environmentally and economically impacted communities around the world. Their intentions are to make money for the few at the expense of communities. Of course these companies are interested in Hawai'i due to it's year round growing season, and other favorable conditions. We need to keep these companies away from our precious island lest our communities become beholden to their environmentally and financially destructive practices. 2) Environmental- chemicals in Roundup and other herbicides used on GMO crops contain glyphosate. No long term studies have been performed on glyphosate translating to we do not know the long term effects of glyphosate. 3) Health- considerable more herbicides are used on GMO crops. The chemicals are toxic, and end up in our land, water, farming and swimming sources and effect our health.
