Brenda and I will do it as you suggest and try to submit something written by email before noon
Monday. Hope you are well and that something worthwhile comes of this. We just came back from
Washington State, where a near sure thing GMO labeling initiative on the ballot was narrowly defeated
in the end by millions and millions of dollars from out of state interests and the deceptive ads that
money paid for. Sickening. As I told Brenda, corporations now have more power in the US than
religion - marriage equality passes despite strong religious opposition while Monsanto et al repeatedly
overcome what people want and need.

Yes the testimony is limited to 3 minutes. The best way to not have to wait too long is to
be at Margaret's Office in Waimea(next to the feed store) at 9:00 a.m. or a little before and
sign up to testify from there. Yes a written statement is also important. It can be sent by
Monday at noon to counciltestimony @co.hawaii.hi.us
Maybe Brenda is the person to testify on the story of the Environmental Committee survey
and wording in the final document and you also can drive the point home with your broader
perspective of the process. No one has testified on this VERY VERY important piece.
If you could BOTH testify it would be very powerful. So a short statement from each of
you for the record sent to the email address above AND to the Council Members, by
Monday at NOON. I attach all the Council emails. Then Tuesday at 9:00 or before (to
assure you can testify and then leave in a timely manner at Margaret's Office
<Council contact.docx>

Maybe you can clarify with Nancy what would be needed. Is
testimony really limited to 3 minutes? Will everyone there get to
testify? Is written testimony necessary (or likely to be read) in
addition? Also, Brenda was head of the Environmental
Committee and I was chair of another committee but on the
Steering Committee for the whole Plan. Note too that the
recommendations Nancy refers to concern environmental (and
other) issues and were part of the final Plan report, not just what
the Environmental Committee wanted. As chair of that
committee, Brenda could certainly testify on what the final report
recommended and/or I could testify as I was also very involved in
process and writing the final report. The main point, of course, is
that the Plan followed months of widespread community
participation and input and came out squarely against simply
allowing GMOs (opting for invoking the precautionary principle
as a compromise). And the survey in which virtually all of the
300+ people who responded unequivocally said GMOs have no
place in Hamakua. This was not so long ago and established a
clear consensus that cannot be ignored. No other issue garnered
as much comment or attention when the Plan was formulated.
Please run (or forward) the above to Nancy for responses. We are
willing to weigh in but need to know how she thinks we can best
help and how much time we need to spend. Thanks, George
