I am in support of Bill 113 for the health of my family, my community, to the world and the planet earth. We need to take care
of our precious resources by practicing farming techniques used for thousands of years, verses poising our land and using
biotechnoloy. The long-term risks are there and we must stand up for what is pono. I support am in support of Bill 113 for the
following reasons:
POINTS IN SUPPORT OF BILL 113
1) GMO Papaya industry is exempt and the small fees for registration are no reason to prevent this monumentally crucial bill
from passing for the protection of our island.
2) Abundant good science showing the harm of the GMO industry as well as their fallacious claims, all of which has been
presented by numerous testifiers that GMOs are not a sustainable method of farming and are not part of the solution for a
planet in peril. It is another reason why many, many countries have already outlawed them, lets follow other countries
example!!!
4) GMO agriculture and conventional or organic farming cannot coexist due to pollen and pesticide drift. GMO agriculture robs
organic and conventional farmers of their choices and livelihoods.
5) Studies showing that traditional breeding outweighs genetic engineering claims to cope with climate change conditions such
as drought and increased global temperatures.
6) Bill 2491 just passed on Kauai, limiting the poisons of the GMO industry. We need to join with our Kauai ohana and prevent
that chaos before it has a chance to take root here on Hawaii Island.
7) Countries all over the world have banned GMOs; it's our time to catch up with the rest of the world.
8 )This bill will protect both organic farmers and commercial farmers as well as every single living thing on this island.
9) I have brought with me today a petition to Mr. Ilagan signed by almost a thousand supporters of Bill 113, many of whom are
Mr. Ilagan's constituents. The letter outlines the scientifically evidenced consequences of GMO farming, how it is not part of a
solution to climate change, and asks Mr. Ilagan, who is my representative, to reconsider his position on this bill. With your
permission, council chair, I'd like to present Mr. Ilagan with this petition.
10)This bill is a first step to safeguarding our island in an increasingly toxic world, for safely growing organic and commercial
non-GMO food that improves health and preserves what remains of traditional Hawai'i. We don't need RoundUp-Ready and Bt-
toxin GMO technology here and we never have. So, let's make sure it stays this way.
11) Please pass Bill 113. Mahalo.
