Subject: Bill 113 is GOOD for Papaya and other GM farmers
Dear Councilmembers:
Bill 113 is good for farmers of the Big Island, especially for those raising Rainbow Papaya crops.
Sound fishy? No it is not. Bill 113 is a good bill, taking care of existing Rainbow and other GM papaya
farmers by keeping their farms available to grow this GM crop in perpetuity.
Yes they have to register in order to maintain this benefit for their farmland, but it is similar in "hassle"
and price as registering their cars and trucks. Not a harsh requirement at all for such a substantial
benefit.
If some farmer has a crop that suddenly really needs GM technology, Bill 113 allows for that
eventuality.
At the same time, expansion of more Round-Up Ready crops is stabilized at our current level, which is
substantial for a land mass the size of Big Island. Ranchers of grass-fed beef will not have to deal so
much with "drift" of Round-Up type sprays that are certainly going to "drift" to the grasslands of
Hamakua and Waimea, killing grasses.
Bill 113 is a reasonable bill, taking in to account the realities as we now face them, setting a "hold" on
GM crops on Hawaii Island while we, together, figure out how we are going to move forward, again,
TOGETHER, via a good task force.
I trust you will all see how Bill 113 is good for Hawaii Island, at this time, and that you will all vote
FOR BILL 113.
