(Here is my testimony-Sunshine, please let me know if it needs a certain format...)
As former Principal of Honokaa Elementary, it was a great concern of mine to have a school in the middle of two main
thoroughfares. In my 4 years of working at Honoka'a Elementary we've have 3 near misses (that I know about)with
children on the Waipio side of the campus, where cars are reversing and children are walking to school almost getting
banged. I'm sure that we've had more, it just hasn't been reported.
We've had two major accidents where a substitute teacher hit a parents car while reversing and a teacher while reversing
lost control of her car and hit two other cars.
We've also called the police on several occasions as some people drive up this gravel road and speed to park at the oval.
On the Hilo side of the school, it seems to be a little better, but still it is a concern. We've worked with the County to get
signs and speed bumps up Pakalana street and we try to have parents use the area as a drop-off zone. It does get a little
cluttered from 7:30am-8am, but it is better than the Waipio side of campus. I am happy to support this bill and very
excited that the school will be getting an official drop off zone and parking to share with the community.

Subject:County Council Bill and Resolution
Hi All, Council Member Val Poindexter, has submitted both a Bill and a Resolution for monies to plan, design and
construction of the Honokaa El School parking and student drop off/pickup facility. Attached is the Bill 186,
Comm. 618,and it refers to the Finance Committee Resolution 618. Tomorrow the bill and resolution will be heard.
Please submit testimony in support of this bill and reso so that this project can be more than just talk over the
years- (Kate Tolentino talked about this when she was principal at Honokaa El, Rachelle talked about it during her
principalship and now Rory begins the talk: the talk has been for 8 years and now it's time for the money to start
the project.
Thank you to both Valerie and to Mark Nakashima for believing that now the time is right.
Remember the accident on Pakalana just recently where a young lady was injured trying to get to school and needed
