The scheduled West Hawaii County Council Meeting
This is notification that I am sponsoring a certificate of recognition. We will be
presenting this certificate at the March 19th, 2014 scheduled Hawai'i Council meeting.
The Certificate of Recognition will be presented to the President of the Firewise
Communities for the ten years of dedicated efforts and its national recognition of
achievement as part of the Firewise Communities USA program. We will need 15
minutes for our presentation.

Firewise — Kohala By The Sea
Firewise Communities is the national program created to reduce the risk of wild fires by
educating communities to minimize home loss to fire and to prepare for a fire before it occurs. It
is part of the National Wildland Urban Interface Fire Program and works with federal and county
fire departments around the state.
The Hawai'i County Council takes this opportunity to congratulate the Community of Kohala
By The Sea for the 10 years of dedicated efforts,commitment and its national recognition of
achievement as part of the Firewise Communities USA program.
Through tireless diligence Kohala By The Sea Firewise Community has completed the five
step program, attended Firewise workshops,mailed or hand delivered information kits to
every landowner in the community,and provided construction checklist videos 'How to build a
Firewise Home' including conducting a wildfire hazard assessment to determine the wildfire risk
of the Kohala By The Sea Community.
A new and innovative'Fire Automated Call Procedure'ensuring all homeowners easy access
instructions to get the word to the community about a fire in the area is to be applauded but
above all, the invested time and personal money used to purchase the needed equipment serves
as an inspiration to all communities.
On behalf of the Hawai'i County Council and the Hawai'i Island Community,we extend our
gratitude and appreciation with hope that this community effort will serve as an example for
