Good Morning Council Members. CJn behalf of Rose Andrade Correia'o eldest son, ny father the late �
John Jose Andrade,we thank you for giving us the opportunity to purpose the'naming of the Hmnohaa arena the /
|
"Rose Andrade Correia stadiunm°. Through her generosity and lifetime support of the arena,the Saddle Club,
and the Western Week have become known not only on this island,but throughout the state as well. !
It all started in 1906 when her future husband John Jose Andrade established his business on the '
Harnakuaooast. Rose de Silva married John,a rancher and successful businessman in 1916. Together they ran a /
i
large cattle ranch,slaughterhouse, meat market and the Andrade's Caf6 in Honokaa town which is now leased |
to other businesses, in addition toaHonmkaa'Hi|m bus service. While blocking horses on their ranch,Grandpa
Andrade was killed at age 46. This left Grandma Rose, in the early 193Os, a young widow with seven children:
John, Mary Mae,Alfred,Caroline, Evelyn,William and Lorraine. i

During World War 11,Waimea was a dry town and troops training at Camp Tarawa in Waimea came to
Honohaaon their fur|gvxdays. Honokaa became a boom town and the Andrade Cafd thrived under her !
management. Troops were shown a warm welcome by Rose. The restaurant and bar had a hotel,anofficers'
club and a lanai for dancing. Locally grown grass fed beef were raised and served mn the restaurant menu.
Army troops enjoyed bronc riding in Waimea near Parker Ranch and locals participated in Honokaa as
well, but it was haphazard without corrals or fences. Recognizing a need for a recreational area where people
could come and participate in a sport beloved by our grandmother,she set aside land in Honokaa from her de
Silva heritage as a place where all the ranchers on the island could come together to rope and compete. |txvas
with this in mind that the Hawaii Saddle Club was born.
We were young children in the early 1950s when the Hawaii Saddle Club was founded with Grandma
Andrade and her second husband Dan Correia, her son William,along with "doc"Willett, Ethel Andrade from
Waimea,an army colonel from Pohaku|ma and John Tevesas original officers and members.
So when the Hawaii Saddle Club started up, it attracted more than ropers, but bnonc and bull riders as
well from the Army camp and participants from all over the island as well asspectators.
As years went on, Grandma was a very active community member and became the heart of Honokaa
town. She was active in the Honokaa Business Association and influenced her children and grandchildren to
carry on her hard work.

Later in 1952,our father took over his parents' business of processing cattle and built up the]J.
Andrade Slaughterhouse, and later,with the assistance of his son J.J. and daughter Jill, made it a successful

business until his death in2OO6.

Today the family legacy continues with JJs Country Market in Honokaa town with Rose's granddaughter
Jill Andrade W1attnsas general manager. Jill is also general manager of Hawaii Beef Producers inPoaui|o.The

cattle business legacy still remains a great part of the J.J.Andrade family today.

Growing up,we looked forward to Memorial Day weekend because that was when we all got dressed up
in our western wear, saddled up our horses and got to ride in the Rodeo Parade through town and then head up
to the arena to watch all the cowboys compete in bull riding, saddle and bareback bronc riding,calf roping,daily

team roping and wild cow milking, but not.before riding in the Grand Entry around the arena carrying
the American flag followed by the Hawaii Saddle Club banner. It was a weekend event which saw visitors from
all over the island and ranches represented not only from our big island, but from all over the state of Hawaii. It
eventually evolved to a Western Week event which today helps all the local businesses in the community.
I remember the year our father competed in dally team roping with rancher Jack Ramos and together
they took first place and a silver buckle for their efforts. We have all been a part of the rodeo scene from the
junior rodeos when our brother John rode Junior bull.riding event and later rode rough stock and served as a
rodeo clown.Our sister Jan competed as well in barrel racing and sister Jill competed in wahine double
mugging. I,Jody,was Rodeo Queen in 1967 when Anna Lindsey Perry-Fiske was the Grand Marshall for that
year. My sister Jan's family still competes in the rodeo scene and parades along with Grandma Rose Andrade
Correia's great grandchildren and great,great grandsons.
It is evident that without our grandmother's foresight and generosity in donating this land,we would
not have this rich tradition that has benefited not only Honokaa town, but the state of Hawaii as well. The
Hawaii Saddle Club donates toward scholarships for high school students furthering their education toward
college.This continues to bring families together for fun and education. We owe a debt to Rose Andrade
Correia for her aloha and wonderful example of how we can come together and celebrate our talents and
traditions.
