Testimony on Communication 721.In Favor of the Keauhou Aquifer System Petition
Aloha Council Members,
In order to prevent irreversible harm the National Park Service has formally petitioned the state Water Commission to
designate the Keauhou Aquifer System Ground Water Management Area.
With projected population growth on the Big Island of around 350,000 more people by 2040—and increased demand(not to
mention reduced precipitation as a result of climate change),the state must work proactively now toward ensuring an
adequate supply of water.
At the last hearing,it was pointed out that there is no current plan for water use in the Keauhou area;development is
addressed as a first come,first serve issue.This not proactive planning, and will not serve the needs of our community into the
future.
I urge the County Council to support the National Park Service Water Commission petition request,and act to protect the
resources before detrimental effects of groundwater withdrawal damages the ecosystems that support the fish we eat,the
reefs that enthrall residents and visitors alike,and the birds and wildlife that make Hawaii unique in all the world.
