Dear Members of the Hawaii County Council,
Please support the purchase of this one acre grassy parcel in central Hawi to preserve it as open space
for community gatherings,festivals,youth activities, and the expansion of the Farmer's Market. j
One of the most well used and important features of rural towns are the 'town squares', areas where
locals and visitors alike, of all ages, can gather and participate in art,culture, commerce, recreation and
local food activities.These locations and events are critical to a community's identity building and are
heavily relied upon economic drivers for small businesses in rural towns through out the U.S.
Hawi has historically made use of this grassy acre in support of these types of events. As the town goes
through the process of post sugar cane industry revitalization,this highly valued open space will
become increasingly important to strengthening the local community as a social and economic hub. I
work for a non-profit that has recently written a National Endowment for the Arts grant proposal to
encourage more cultural events on this plaza area and we strongly support maintaining this great
centrally located open space property.
There are several other areas along the highway with better pedestrian access that could be used for
more effective commercial development, which would be welcomed for economic revitalization, but
the potential loss of the open space 'plaza' in the heart of our town would be a great loss for current
and future generations. With the current parcel owners willing to sell this to the County,this is a
pivotal opportunity to invest in the future of Hawi's village-core infrastructure. Preserving this open
space will have great social and economic benefits for generations to come.
