Re: Support for Resolution No. 332-14 to Purchase TMK 3-5-5-15-42, Banyan Trees Area, Hawi
Aloha, Council Members
I urge you to pass resolution 332-14 to purchase the Banyan Trees Area in downtown Hawi. For more than fifty
years, the community has used this area as a park.
I have been farming organically on Island for more than thirty and I can attest to how critical it is that the Hawi
Farmers Market is guaranteed a permanent home to support agriculture in Kohala. Maintaining this area as a
park will ensure the Hawi Farmer's Market always has a home and is wise planning—maintaining a village green
in the heart of a commercial area creates long-term visual appeal and community gathering space for Hawi as the
area continues to grow and develop.
The home and gallery that the owners intend to build on this space if the County does not purchase this area will
provide only one job. If preserved by the County as a public space,this area can provide a diversity of
economic opportunities for more people every week and over time than a home and gallery—festivals,
expanded farmer's market, magnet to downtown businesses,etc.
My company and I are committed to working with other local merchants and community groups and members to
provide long-term management of the area through a Friends of the Park agreement, if that is,helpful to the
County.
I urge you to pass Resolution 332-14. Thank you for your time and service.
