Your Committee on Finance, to which was referred Resolution No. 419-14, reports as follows:
Resolution No. 419-14, transmitted by Council Member Greggor Ilagan, via Communication No. 866
dated April 24, 2014, authorizes the Director of Finance to enter into negotiations for the acquisition of
Tax Map Key: 1-4-093:042 in the District of Puna, pursuant to Chapter 2, Article 42, Hawai`i County
Code 1983 (2005 Edition, as amended).
The land adjacent to Ahalanui Park and the Hot Pond (2.045 acres) is listed as the 13th priority for
purchase by the Public Access, Open Space, and Natural Resources Preservation Commission.
Finance Property Manager Ken Van Bergen came before Your Committee to answer questions. He stated
that the parcel's assessed value is $400,000. Mr. Van Bergen added that the property abuts a County
owned 20-acre parcel.
Council Member Ilagan and Ford spoke in support of the resolution. Ms. Ford stated that it follows the
will of the public to protect open space for future generations.
Pursuant to Section 2-218, Hawai`i County Code 1983 (2005 Edition, as amended), the Director of
Finance is authorized to enter into negotiations for the acquisition of lands adjacent to Ahalanui Park and
the Hot Pond in the District of Puna, pursuant to the terms of Resolution No. 419-14.
Your Committee on Finance is in accord with the purpose and intent of Resolution No. 419-14, and
recommends its adoption.
