Critical Hawai'i Considerations for Waste-to-Enemy Systems
• Plastics: most useful energy source in this process—energy-density comparable to petroleum
• Glass: robs energy from process through melting—i)re-use or ii) separate for use in construction
• Metals: may add or rob energy or add toxins—i)re-use or ii)recycle iii)high-value form
• Batteries: concentrated source of toxins—critical that they are removed
• Food waste: high water content robs energy through evaporation -- energy more valuable as food
i)return to soil via composting or ii)use as feed for livestock(e.g. chickens/pigs)
• Green waste: high water content robs energy through evaporation—vital component of soil
o most effective to compost at point of use and return to soil
o critical component in creating soil(e.g. in young lava regions)
o critical component in restoring soil(e.g. in deforested and heavily eroded areas)
o primary material enabling soil to hold water
• supports aquifer recharge by rain-water
• reduces poisoning of ocean/marine-life by soil/silt run-off and dust
o No man-made material can be substituted to build soil
o Depleted regions/farms focusing on soil/profit spare no expense to import compost

• Dramatically increases soil productivity and crop health/nutrition
o Energy needed to import/regenerate organic material is much greater than the energy than

(types of plastic); (glass colors); (batteries; lead;oil;paint; fluorescent bulbs); etc. Re-use and segregation
is common practice in locations addressing negative impact of pollution and waste:Education+Facilities.
