If you were to go to quickfacts.census.gov/ choose Hawaii as the state and then
Honolulu and Hawaii Counties, you will see that by dividing the 2013 estimated
populations of Honolulu County by that of Hawaii County, you will see the futility
of burning our trash as fuel to power this island. Their population is over five
times that of ours, meaning we would have to go out of our way to generate more
trash to burn that we would eventually suffer from a massive burnout and not
even all of the hot air and gooberment red tape would be enough to support
combustion. From my perspective, waste to energy on this island would be both
impractical and infeasible, much like that wretched traffic circle we're to be
condemned with in Pahoa.
What we need is compost and their associated bins in the recycling center for
compostable materials not considered green waste, which really isn't waste, as it
can be manufactured into a biodegradable plastic that could be ingested by many
creatures, especially the ones in the oceans where the stuff will probably end up.
Industry is only concerned with making money, as the consequences of their
products are seldom their concern until lawsuits start rolling in. When you buy a
new car, you are also paying for potential death and injury lawsuits and the
associated recalls if they deign have one.
I shall leave you with one of Norman Augustine's laws: "Many of today's
problems were yesterday's solutions."
